Martin Logan Motion SLM Loudspeaker

Gayle Martin Sanders and Ron Logan Sutherland met in the late '70s at a high-end audio store. They shared a passion for music and soon discovered electrostatic loudspeakers.

For anyone seeking the ultimate in sonic purity and clarity, electrostatics held enormous appeal. Unfortunately, designing and building one that will also produce the sound levels and bass extension most people expect from a loudspeaker is a formidable challenge, even today. Back then, only a relative handful of electrostatic speakers had ever been brought to market. Sanders and Sutherland convinced each other they could do better. They were sure they could build an electrostatic speaker that would produce adequate bass, output, and sound dispersion without arcing, blowing up amplifiers, or otherwise offending people not interested in a living-room science project.

The first prototype was ready in 1980. Naturally, it still had that science-project quality—a flat aluminium panel sprouting wires, struts, transformers, and power supplies, connected to an amplifier in Sanders' living room. It sounded even better than expected, but when they turned up the volume, a lightning storm erupted across the panel and music was replaced by a plume of smoke drifting toward the ceiling. Still, they knew they were close. At the 1983 CE Show, they displayed their full-range hybrid electrostatic loudspeaker they called the Monolith and sales started to flow over the coming years. By 1988 sales had increased tenfold and their plant expanded to include a large, dedicated production space. In 1989, and again in 1990, Inc. magazine recognized MartinLogan as one of the 500 fastest-growing privately held companies in the United States.

In the early 1990's MartinLogan released the world's first electrostatic centre-channel and on-wall surround-channel speakers, establishing MartinLogan as a major player in the emerging home theatre market

In January of 2005 MartinLogan once again raised the bar for high-performance audio with the release of the Summit electrostat. A major departure from all things that came before, Summit combines dual independently powered woofers with MartinLogan's most advanced electrostatic transducer to date - the XStat.

On-Wall, Off-Wall Overachiever

The slender Motion SLM speakers features an advanced resolution Folded Motion™ tweeter, two 4" high-excursion fiber cone woofers and two passive bass radiators for maximum controlled low-end bass extension, all in an ultra-slim profile designed expressly for super-thin TVs. It makes a great center channel speaker, but is also well suited for main left and right channel duties.

Changing Your Perceptions

"The slimmest MartinLogan speaker ever features a multitude of install options and will change the perception of what is possible from a low-profile speaker," notes Brian Mitchell in Ecoustics.com for January 10, 2012.

In his January 9, 2012 review for Audioholics.com, Clint DeBoer reports that the Motion SLM is "ideal for Left-Center-Right (LCR) applications, and each Motion SLM includes 'kick-stand' brackets that attach to the back of the cabinet, allowing them to free-stand for horizontal center channel applications."

Slender Profile and Stunning Performance

The secret to the Motion SLM's outstanding performance is the innovative dual 4", ultra-slim fiber cone woofers and dual 4" high-velocity passive bass radiators, paired with a Folded Motion tweeter to create stunning acoustical alchemy typically found in much larger speaker systems. Hidden discretely underneath the grille, the drivers are held securely in place by a solid, black-anodized brushed aluminum baffle. The high-gloss black Motion SLM cabinet is only 1.45" thick, for a total wall protrusion of 1.83-inches with magnetic grille and included wall mount bracket.

Folded Motion Tweeter

The Folded Motion Tweeter works by moving air (which creates sound) perpendicular to the folded ridges of the diaphragm, similar to how an accordion works. This extremely low mass diaphragm 'squeezes' air and requires almost 90 percent less excursion than the typical 1" dome tweeter, which drastically minimizes distortion while providing a lighting fast response time. The increased surface area also provides a wide, yet controlled sound dispersion to create a realistic and carefully etched sound stage.

Lightning fast transient response, combined with a large surface area (several times that of a typical 1" dome tweeter) creates clear, highly dynamic, and precise sound.

The Perfect LCR System

The Folded Motion tweeter has an 80-degree by 80-degree dispersion pattern, which allows the Motion SLM to sound exactly the same in a horizontal or vertical orientation, making them perfect for Left-Center-Right (LCR) system applications. The logo on the grille is magnetic and can move and rotate to the proper atheistically pleasing location in any orientation. Each speaker includes a curved black-glass base allowing the Motion SLM to sit on a shelf or equipment cabinet.

Also included are 'kick-stand' brackets that attach to the back of the cabinet, allowing them to free-stand for center channel applications.
